FEM FESTIVAL: SUMMER EDITION

Written by Georgia Mitchell

In August 2018, FEM hosted its second FEM Festival

The Summer Edition focused on showcasing other zines, makers and artists.

Selling at the event was Daikon Zine, Sassify Zine, Thisguise, Bandasaur, Thiird, The Feminist Library, Black Fly Zine, and brk/th/hbt press.

The intention behind the festival was to curate a truly intersectional space. There was a schedule of incredible thought-provoking talks, including a discussion led by Over Here Zine Fest (a festival for zines made by only PoC creatives) with Black Fly Zine (a sexual health zine for PoC) and Daikon (a zine by and for South East Asian trans, NB people and women) about the importance of PoC-led and centred spaces, and about white gatekeeping. Kat Hudson led the ‘Don’t Debate My Gender: A discussion led by queers’ panel inspired by the abominable Channel 4 ‘Gender Debate’ last year, during which Jamie Windust, Ashton Attzs, Chloe Filani, Lucia Blake and Ayesha-Tan Jones reclaimed discourse on gender and sexuality.

Cheer Up Love and Mad Art Magazine led creative workshops, and in our non-binary glam corner, Ashton Attzs did a queer barbershop with shape-ups all day, Fuego Nails did manis and Talia Darling glitter makeovers.

We shared our after party with Femmetopia at VfD, where Jasper Jarvis, Talia Darling, Khaleel and Zmaraks took over the decks.
